Tired of Oprah

It's Friday so let's jump right in with both feet shall we?

I want to encourage you to take the time and watch the 7 minute video on You Tube called, "The Church of Oprah Exposed." Why? I think it's time for people to understand what this woman is all about.

I'm sure that my statements will bother some people, but I can't take it anymore. This woman has become so influential that there are more than a few folks being led away by her current theological stance. Just in case you don't know: Oprah is not a Christian. In fact, it's her own testimony that convicts her. She has said that in her late 20's she became impatient with "rules, belief systems and doctrines." She also states that a lot of it started when she heard a pastor speak of God as a jealous God.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I have always though of Oprah as a conformist. She tries to morph into whoever is on her show. If Billy Graham is scheduled to appear she returns to her faith tradition. The very next day she can have some new age guru on the show and she turns it off. I have never felt she was a person of deep conviction when it comes to matters of faith. However, what we have seen recently is a determination to influence her audience toward New Age beliefs.

During all of this - God has not changed. Yes, the Bible tells us about a God who is jealous but His is a different type of jealousy than ours. We often think of jealousy in a negative way. God, however, is jealous for us. And why not? He created us, gave His Son on the cross for us, and offers us eternal life. God wants to be a part of who we are. To be quite honest with you, I'm glad that God is jealous for us. I'm thankful that God doesn't allow us to walk around with other gods because it speaks of His love for you and me.

I think for Oprah and those who follow the same path, this isn't an issue about God. It's really all about what they want. They want a God that's O.K. with us seeking out our own spirituality. They want a God that says it's O.K. to divorce, have sex outside of marriage, pursue all of your fleshly desires, and not have to conform to any kind belief system. It's all about idolatry: creating God in your own image. There's nothing NEW about New Age theology. This has been going on for centuries.

I will agree with Oprah about one thing: I have grown impatient with rules, belief systems and doctrines, but we differ greatly in how we respond. I embrace the God of Scripture while she embraces New Age theology. I embrace Jesus Christ as the only sacrifice for sin and means of salvation while she embraces herself as the only way to god likeness. I embrace the concept of a jealous God while she rejects the whole idea.

Yes, I'm impatient with any rules, belief systems, or doctrines that keep us from knowing the ONE TRUE GOD. Jesus said (literally), "I am the Way the Truth and the Life - NO ONE comes to the Father EXCEPT THROUGH ME."

Having a Bad Day?

Plumber Needed:
Did you know that there was a faulty toilet on the space station? Yeah - that's right, one of the Russian built toilets isn't working properly. Man - that's gotta stink!

Adding Fuel to the Fire:
People have been complaining about high gas prices as we close in on $4.00 a gallon. Did you know that in France the price of gas is $8.67 and diesel is $8.54. In the UK gas is $8.70 while diesel has jumped to $11.50. OPEC blamed high oil prices this week on the weakness of the American dollar. Funny, I thought the Euro was pretty strong.

OOPS:
Vaclar Tichy resigned from his post, his deputy was fired, and another official from the Czech Republic's soccer federation was fined after a little mishap on Tuesday night. According to the report, the Latvian flag was placed in the game program and the Latvian national anthem was played before the game. The problem: Czech Republic was facing Lithuania not Latvian!
Maybe Czech Republic's soccer federation needs to adopt a new theme song. How about Michael W. Smith's "Place in this World"?

Can You Believe This:
On Sunday afternoon, Jamal Watts was shot for the 3rd time in the past 12 years. 5 years ago, Jarmell Austin shot Watts confining him to a wheelchair. This past weekend Watts was shot Austin's brother Ronnie. The good news - Watts condition has been updated from critical to fair. The bad news - what do you have to be doing to be shot 3 times in 12 years? (I don't share this story because it's funny - I just find it so unreal)

Is Nothing Sacred:
In Galesburg and 84 year old man was attacked with moon pies. That's right...they were being hurled at him by a 53 year old homeless man.

So, Still Think You're Having a Bad Day:
2 New Zealand pilots were flying in a microlight airplane when they ran out of fuel.
Grant Stubbs & Owen Wilson were making their flight on Sunday the 18th when the engine coughed and then died.
"My friend and I are both Christians so our immediate reaction...was to ask God for help", said Stubbs. He prayed that they would make it over the top of a ridge and find a landing site that wasn't too steep or in the sea.
Wilson said, "There was an instantaneous answer to prayer as we crossed the ridge and there was an airfield" (he didn't know existed).
When the two men landed in the grassy strip they stopped beside a 20 ft. billboard that read (I'm not joking) "Jesus is Lord."

O.K, O.K. - I've got a reason for all of this.
Jesus is Lord.
Sometimes we just need to be reminded of that fact.
Remember, your day may not have started out so great but at least your not looking for the nearest outhouse in space, buying gas in Europe, taking Geography again, recovering from a shooting, or being attacked by an American classic. No - I want you to think of your day to be like that of the two pilots. You got up, got in your plane, and hoped that everything will fly right. In the end - even though you may feel lucky to have made an emergency landing - Jesus is Lord.

Have A GREAT Day!

Would You Agree?

Matthew 18:19, "Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven."

I wonder how many of us are creatures of habit when it comes to the Internet? I can usually tell you the first 4-5 websites I'm going to visit as soon as I sit at my CPU. Today, however, I did a little Internet strolling and visited Henry Blackaby's website (link under "Neal's best of the web"). I noticed that they had a link to hear Blackaby speak on various topics. Prayer was the topic today. I didn't hear anything new but it made me think. {Just a note: if all you do is hear Blackaby read scripture and stop to ask "Did you get that?" it's worth taking the time to do so}

The verse quoted above is a reference to prayer. In face value alone it's one of the greatest promises of prayer ever given to us. However, what I need to point out to you is that the promise given is conditioned upon agreement. When we agree on earth about anything it will be done. Why then is there such difficulty in regards to prayer?

Every Wednesday evening our church body assembles together for the sole purpose of prayer. As a pastor I must credit Jim Cymbala for reminding me of the necessity of prayer among God's people. It was after reading "Fresh Wind Fresh Fire" several years ago that God began burdening my heart about collective prayer within the church. Immediately we made the change. I was excited about the new direction - I wish I could say it was true of the whole church at the time. I'm not saying that our church stood against prayer; I'm saying that not everyone at the time stood with it.

I think that there is a common misconception when it comes to prayer meetings. Some Christians have this idea that prayer is boring, unattractive, and meaningless. I will tell you from experience that prayer is none of the above. In fact, I have found prayer to be exciting, beautiful in the eyes of God, and so meaningful in the life of the church that we dare not exclude it. For at least one couple in our church God used the means of an "ordinary" prayer meeting to answer their prayers for a child. Others can cite God's answers for provision, the salvation of family members and friends, healing, and direction. Time and space does not allow me to dive into all the stories but I think you get the picture - Prayer Among God's People Works.

When you look at the teaching in Matt. 18:19 there are some things that cannot be ignored.
1) Prayer was a great emphasis in the teachings of Jesus.
- I want you to notice the word "again". This was a topic that He had addressed before. When God repeats something we need to take notice!

2) We can never de-emphasize the importance of agreement.
- I wonder how many churches will continue to fall by the wayside before answering the call to pray? How many marriages will continue to end in divorce before husbands and wives break dismantle their pride and kneel together to ask God to do a work in their lives? How many children will continue to go the way of the prodigal before mom and dad decide it's time to pray for God to bring their lost child home? When you and I agree in prayer it moves the heart and hand of God.

3) Pay careful attention to the word "ask".
- As children of God we don't demand anything! I liken this to our relationship with our earthly parents. When I was a child I knew that everything my parents owned could be accessed by me, but I did not have a right to demand it of them. I was taught to ask. If I asked, they gave what I needed. God works on the same principle. We may claim the promises of God but we must do so with the understanding that He is God. When we stop demanding - and start asking - God can work in marvelous ways.

4) Whenever we pray in agreement - consider it done!
- I say to you, again, this is a promise. God's promises have never failed. When He says it will be done - it will be done. All we have to do is agree.

I hope that this teaching of prayer will motivate you to pray with your spouse, your children, and your church. The needs of this life are too great to be left up to chance. Why don't we take the time to make things happen? It's time for us to emphasize once again the power of prayer. Would you agree?

Welcome Back

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day. For most of you it's back to the grindstone. Hopefully the energy you gained from the grilled hot dogs and burgers will carry you through this busy day.

As I considered what grand topic should be covered today I thought why not talk about what every news network is talking about. HIGH GAS PRICES! Call me crazy, but I don't get as excited about this topic as everyone else. I'm not happy with the price of gas, but I don't see it as the end of the world. The reason why I take this position is because I know that we (as a nation) can greatly affect the cost of gasoline at the pump. All we have to do is affect the cost in the barrel. How do we do that? Pumping our own oil!

Just last week the Senate held some "hearings". Actually they put on a little show with top execs from BIG OIL COMPANIES (if you are going to be in the media you have to learn to say it with disdain). They hammered them, and hammered them, over oil prices. One Senator actually asked them, "Don't you care what you are doing to us?" Interesting...that's a question we could all ask the Senate! Then there's the story about this idiot Congressman (Paul Kanjorski) who introduced HR5800, a bill that would tax windfall oil & gas profits. These profits of course would be determined by a "Reasonable Profits Board."

Folks - WAKE UP! The media and those in power want you to think that the greatest threat to this country is rising gas prices. Listen to their statements. Hillary Clinton said she wanted those profits. Obama continually hammers "BIG OIL". Now we are having hearings and creating bills to ensure that oil companies only make a certain amount of money. There is such wealth envy in this country that you won't have too many people complaining about it. In fact, most Americans don't have a problem with you making money as long as you are not in the oil business, pharmaceutical business, insurance business, or the food business. All other business can make money - just not you.

What spurred this interest in me this morning was that I was channel surfing with my kids before school. As I came across the CBS early morning show I noticed that they were doing a piece on a guy who was drilling for oil in his backyard. There was a small pump working hard to produce 3 barrels of oil a day. By years end they believe he will make a profit. By year's end? I thought oil companies were making record profits? You mean it actually costs money to drill for oil? Oh...wait...back to the story. Point is: this shouldn't be news. We have oil in the United States. We just don't want to pump it. Let me rephrase that: tree-huggers and liberals don't want us to pump it.

I can protest: FREE OUR NATION - FREE OUR OIL! (quick somebody grab a sharpie and a poster and let's congregate in front of the mayor's office).

The "Greater Love"

John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends."

If there is one lesson that history has taught America it's that freedom isn't free. There is a price to be paid to live as free men and women. For America to become a free nation, blood had to be shed. For America to continue to enjoy the freedom she had won, blood had to be shed. Over and over again throughout the course of our history wars had to be fought to ensure that America continues to be a free nation. No my friends, peace doesn't happen automatically, peace must be achieved.

I find it interesting that the older I get the less people in this country recognize the price that was paid for us to enjoy the freedoms we possess. How quickly we have forgotten the pain and agony of WWI and WWII. War wasn't easy then and it's definitely not easy now. There are those that would argue about the justification of war. Which battles do we as a nation get involved with? Where are we willing to fight to ensure the peace and security of our nation and our allies? Since we are a free nation we have the opportunity to question the actions of our leaders. However, I am a firm believer that once our troops are committed to fighting we should support their endeavors completely.

I don't know of any father or mother who gladly sends their child off to war. I don't know of any soldier who cheerfully looks at the possibility of death. But I will say that this nation has been blessed by those who were willing to fight to protect our nation. We are fortunate enough to have Americans who believe in the cost of freedom and are ready to pay it's price.

Memorial Day has been set apart to honor those who have given their lives to serve and protect our nations greatest interests: freedom. This is not just some obscure holiday or 3 day weekend. This happens to be one of the most important remembrances our nation does every year. This past week our home town had a rally to remember those who have given their lives in war. As bikers from around our nation joined together to make a "run for the wall" in Washington DC, we are reminded once again of what makes our nation so great. As these men and women streak across the landscape of our state we are reminded of those who boarded a ship or plane for the very first time without the promise of ever returning home.

I find it interesting that the news media would rather do a piece promoting those who protest outside of recruitment centers for our armed forces rather than focus on those who actually honor the service and work that is being done everyday for the cause of America.

Today, let us be reminded of those who have given their lives. Let us take the time to honor those who have exemplified the "Greater Love" of Christ for their brothers and sisters of this country. If there is one thing that unites us as Americans it's the freedoms that we hold dear. Those freedoms came at a great price. Today we think of those who paid it.

This Memorial Day I say "Thank You" to all of those who have honored us. Oh, how I wish that we could go to war without the loss of life. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we never had to say "good-bye" to a man or woman in uniform? But the reality of life and freedom is that someone will pay the price. Today we say "Thanks". Your sacrifice, your service, and your love for this country and your fellow man is not in vain.

Heavenly Father,
Today we thank You for blessing us with individuals who have been willing to give their lives to protect our freedoms. We thank You for the framers of this nation who faced the threats of loss to ensure that America would be a free nation. We thank You for those who were willing to lay down their lives for their friends. Father, we pray for the families who have had to say good-bye to a loved one for the cost of freedom. We pray for Your peace to reign in their lives. We pray for this nation that we will never shrink away from conflict if it is the only means for protecting this nation. Father, we pray for the resolve of this nation. We pray that we will always pay freedoms price with honor and dignity. And God we ask for those who are being deployed in harms way that you will watch over them and their families back home.
We know that you understand sacrifice even more than we do. You gave your Son so that we could have freedom from sin and death. We honor those who have given their best for us.
In Jesus' Name - Amen.

Too Good Not to Share

I'm so glad that God didn't call me to be original. He has called me to be faithful. I ran across this devotional out of "Streams in the Desert" by L.B. Cowman and feel compelled to share it with you. Enjoy!

"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this." Psalm 37:5

The literal meaning of this verse is: "Roll your way onto Jehovah and trust upon Him, and He works." This brings to our attention the immediacy of God's action once we commit, or "roll," burdens of any kind from our hands into His. Whether our burden is sorrow, difficulty, physical need, or concern over the salvation of a loved one, "He works."

When does He work? "He works" now. We act as if God does not immediately accept our trust in Him and thereby delays accomplishing what we ask Him to do. We fail to understand that "He works" as we commit. "He works" now! Praise Him for the fact that this is true.

Our expectation that He will work is the very thing enabling the Holy Spirit to accomplish what we have "rolled" onto Him. At that point it is out of our grasp, and we are not to try to do it ourselves. "He works!" Take comfort from this and do not try to pick it up again. What a relief there is in knowing He really is at work on our difficulty!

And when someone says, "But I don't see any results," pay him no attention.

"He works" if you have "rolled" your burdens onto Him and are "looking unto Jesus" (Heb. 12:2) to do it. Your faith may be tested, but "He works." His Word is true!"

With That In Mind Please Pray:
Our church is hosting our 4th Annual Community Day Spring Fest. This event provides us an opportunity to minister in our community. Last year we fed over 600 people and witnessed several folks come to faith in Christ. Do I believe that God can do that and more this year? The answer is "HE WORKS!"

Have a wonderful weekend.

News worthy / Prayer worthy

DAVID COOK WINS (IN A KNOCKOUT)

According to Ryan Seacrest, David Cook won American Idol by 12 million votes! Interesting that Simon called Tuesday a knockout for the other David considering that when it came down to votes the "Archie" corner was barely swinging.

Congratulations to David Cook. I said all along that I thought he should win but I didn't know if he could get the votes. I was wrong (that's right - I admit it). The question is whether or not Cook will go down the road of a Kelly Clarkson & Carrie Underwood or if he will be swept into obscurity like Ruben, Fantasia, or Taylor. Either way he needs the prayers of believers as he will be faced with all the temptations that come against someone in the music industry.

IN OTHER NEWS

And in keeping with the music theme - I just read a report about the 5 year old daughter of Steven Curtis Chapman passing away after being struck by a vehicle in her driveway.

According to the report the vehicle was driven by her older brother who did not see little Maria. She was rushed to the hospital where she eventually died. Folks, this is tragic news. In case you haven't heard the stories coming out of the Chapman home over the past few years, Steven has become a huge advocate of adoption. The family had adopted 3 daughters from China (which included Maria) and also have 3 biological children.

I cannot imagine the pain that the Chapman family is experiencing today. Any accident involving a child is horrific but those that happen at home (and in this manner) are especially tragic. I ask you to pray for Steven, his wife Mary Beth, and the rest of the children. Pray that the God of all comfort will give them His peace during this time. Pray for the son who has driving the vehicle. I hope that in the midst of this darkness that the light of Christ will shine brightly.

Job said, "Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?" And according to the Bible, "In all this, Job did not sin in what he said." In life we have to learn to take the good with the bad. Every day a child is born and every day another child dies. The only way we can keep our sanity during the roller coaster of life is to have our feet firmly planted in our faith in Jesus Christ.

When Jesus was on the earth He spoke peace to calm the storms. May He continue to speak peace to those who are in the midst of life's storms. In all of this we must remember that Jesus walks upon the waves that beat up against us. God is still Jehovah-Shalom (God our Peace).

Dear Steven and Family - Our prayers are with you.

Say What?

Since I have several items on the burner today's blog will contain various topics.

BUSH TO ATTACK IRAN

According to an Israeli newspaper who quotes a "senior official" President Bush intends to attack Iran in upcoming months. Say What?
Personally I don't like stories like this one. #1 - If it's true why in the world would we tell anyone? Do you realize that there is no element of surprise in war with America these days? #2 - Who is this senior official sharing information that should be confidential? This is no different than Geraldo drawing the map in the sand to show American viewers where the soldiers he was embedded with were located. #3 - Stories like this simply paint Bush as a warmonger rather than a president who uses force when necessary. Don't get me wrong - Iran is a real threat that needs to be dealt with, but if we decide to drop a few bombs on their nuclear facility I believe that it will be planned out.

OBAMA SAYS WHAT WE CAN AND CANNOT DO

A couple of stories that came out over the last few days without a link (you'll have to trust me).
Obama says that his wife is off limits. He doesn't like the fact that she is being criticized in the media. Now let's think about this for a moment...Michelle Obama can stand on a stage somewhere and say that for the first time in her adult life she is "proud of America" but we can't call her on it? If she speaks publicly then she better be ready to wear a bulls-eye. She will come under the same scrutiny as her husband because our words carry weight.
One other thing from Obama came from a speech in Oregon when he basically said that we can't drive our big SUV's and use all the oil we want without concern for the thoughts of other countries. GIVE ME A BREAK! Last time I checked this is America - the land of the free. We have the freedom to choose between a hybrid vehicle or a gas guzzler. We have the freedom to choose between granola or a Big-Mac. I don't need the permission of a foreign country or a political leader.

MCCAIN IS A PROUD VETERAN BECAUSE HE WAS IMPRISONED

According to a NYT magazine - the only reason McCain could come out of Vietnam and be a proud soldier is because he spent so much time as a prisoner of war. Don't believe me - check out the quote:
"They are wary of seeming to denigrate McCain's service, marked by his legendary endurance in a Hanoi prison camp, when in fact they remain, to this day, in awe of it. And yet in private discussions with friends and colleagues, some of them have pointed out that McCain, who was shot down and captured in 1967, spent the worst and most costly years of the war sealed away, both from the rice paddies of Indochina and from the outside world. During those years, McCain did not share the disillusioning and morally jarring experiences of soldiers like Kerry, Webb and Hagel, who found themselves unable to recognize their enemy in the confusion of the jungle; he never underwent the conversion that caused Kerry, for one, to toss away some of his war decorations during a protest at the Capitol. Whatever anger McCain felt remained focused on his captors, not on his own superiors back in Washington."

SIMON SAYS THAT "ARCHIE" DELIVERED THE KNOCKOUT

How could I not share something about American Idol. According to Simon - last night's contest was a "knockout" delivered by David Archuleta. Don't get me wrong here - "Archie" delivered strong performances as far as the vocals were concerned, however, I wanted more. He sang 3 ballads, which are his strong point, but I couldn't help but think he's nothing more than Barry Manilow. Will Archie ever be able to sing a fast song without it sounding like a carnival performance? I had to disagree with Simon last night. Especially in round 2 because I felt that David Cook took a chance with the chosen song and did an awesome job. Just for the record I have said all along that David Cook should win but David A. will probably win. Why? American voters.

WHAT'S THE MEANING OF ALL THIS?

You need to pay attention to what's going on around you. If all you ever do is become a headline reader you are going to miss the news. Sure - Obama will probably become the democrat nominee for the White House but he's in a real "dog fight" and is losing in the popular vote. Sure - Iran is a real threat but it doesn't mean Bush is going to bomb them before he leaves office. Sure - McCain is a proud veteran of our armed services but it's not because he missed the jungles and rice patties. He's proud because he believes in America and understands that our freedoms are worth fighting for. Sure - Simon said that Archie won but for most viewers of American Idol their minds were already made up.

In our media determined world-view we better have an objective opinion about everything around us. Unless you are going to become a kool-aid drinker you better look to see what's in the pitcher. The Bible says that even satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. Nothing is always what it seems. Listen to what people say. Watch to see if words are carried out in action. Be active rather than reactive concerning the things around you. Make sure that your convictions are in order.

I hope you have enjoyed this...I know I have. Be Blessed!

A Week of Opportunity

This is going to be an interesting week. I'm slated on Wednesday to speak to the graduating class of our area high school and on Saturday our church is set to do our greatest evangelistic outreach of the year. Who says that preachers only work one day a week?

I want you to think about these opportunities with me:

When Wednesday evening rolls around I get to share with the future leaders of our communities. These young men and women are preparing to step out of everything that seems familiar into a world where they will make some of the most important decisions of life for themselves. I have been given a chance to encourage, prepare, and instruct them for what lies ahead. Although this is not an "evangelistic" speaking engagement it does provide an opportunity to point us all to the Creator of life.

Saturday provides another type of outreach. This event is primarily evangelistic as we attempt to show the love of God in our service to the community, share the Word of God with those who listen, and a chance to participate in the joy of the Lord. Our community day event has become something extraordinary for our church to be involved with. We do more than offer free food, good music, great fellowship, and fun events for the kids - we offer Christ to a world in need.

For those of you who may be interested the definition of opportunity is: a favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances...a favorable or suitable occasion of time.

Opportunities show up in many different ways. Your opportunities may come at the grocery store, at the ball game, at work, or with the next door neighbor. If there is one thing that I have learned as a pastor it's this: take every opportunity that the Lord provides and use it for His glory. Who knows what life will be touched by a baccalaureate message? Who knows which family can be reached by a simple event in the community? Every opportunity that the Lord gives to us should be taken seriously.

Isaiah 55 teaches us that God's Word does not return to Him void but will accomplish what He sent it out to do. If we are given an opportunity to share His Word we should count it a blessing because we know that we have been given an opportunity to be on his agenda.

I ask you to be in prayer about these events. I ask you to pray the words of Isaiah 55 about the promises of God's Word. I ask you to pray for the lives that will be touched. God has a plan - it's our job to join Him in it. To God be the glory.

Only Passing Through

Sorry I'm so late in posting today, I got a little behind. What can I say - it's my little boy's birthday and I got wrapped up this morning making pancakes during normal blogging hours.

I really don't have a lot to share with you other than the title "Only Passing Through." I have a lot to say but since it's Friday I don't feel like hitting on all the news today. I'll simply say, "I'm only passing through."

After the news of yesterday about gay marriage in California it makes me glad that "I'm only passing through."

After hearing reports of another murder it reminds me that "I'm only passing through."

Once again I see on the news that another child has been abused - "I'm only passing through."

What's that? Another corporation has laid off workers? "I'm only passing through."

This isn't an excuse for being emotionally detached from the things around me. I simply have to keep this mindset. There are things in this world that disturb me, decisions that anger me, and difficulties that burden me. However, "I'm only passing through" and I don't have to allow these things to attach themselves to me.

The Bible teaches me that this world will pass away. So rather than staying discouraged I will remind myself that this world is not my home and "I'm only passing through."

Take this Friday and remind yourself of this awesome truth. If you know Jesus then you are only passing through as well. Let's enjoy the journey!

Current Events

I have avoided the topic of politics so far this week but as Popeye would say "I've stands all I can stands and I can't stands no more."

I recently read an interview where Jeffrey Goldberg spoke with Barack Obama [BO for our purposes today] on the subject of Zionism and Hamas. Mr. Goldberg asked BO if he thought that Israel was a drag on America's reputation overseas. BO said, "No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy..." Did you catch it? It was ever so subtle so I will be sure to put it out there again. He said that Israel was a "CONSTANT SORE that INFECTS all of our foreign policy.

If you don't believe it's true simply go to the atlantic.com and look in their archives. I wouldn't have believed it had I not read it for myself. He just called the apple of God's eye a constant sore that infects America's foreign policy. Israel - America's ally - a constant sore. WOW! It's no wonder that this guys initials are BO cause this stinks. You don't have to be alive long to recognize one major point in foreign policy and that is: Israel is our friend. Work with Israel - good, Side against Israel - bad.

That's not all. Did you know that Hamas supports his presidency? It's true. You can't make this stuff up. BO thinks he knows the reason: "This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name Hussein, and appears more worldly and has called for talks...so he's not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplimacy as George Bush." There it is folks. Let me list them for you. BO thinks Hamas supports his presidency because:

1) He's spent time in the Muslim world
2) His middle name is Hussein
3) Appears more worldly
4) Has called for talks
5) Not going to engage in cowboy diplomacy

Is this guy for real? Hey BO - some of us are actually listening to what you say!

I don't know about you folks but I'll take "cowboy diplomacy" if it means that we aren't being attacked. Ask yourself these questions: What it cowboy diplomacy that dropped an atomic bomb to end a major world war? What it cowboy diplomacy that pushed the former Soviet Union into major collapse without ever firing a shot? I think so. And if it was cowboy diplomacy that took us into Iraq then I have to say "Thank you President Bush" because we have been fighting terrorists in that country instead of ours. If BO really wants to know why Hamas supports him it's because they see him as weak.

I know it's May and that November is several months away. However, it will be here before we know it and a lot of these statements are going to be brushed under the rug. For most of the supporters of BO they don't even know he said it because they have been too busy passing out at his rallies. The only thing I can hope is that the American people will listen.

*** Please be advised that some people say that the only way to deal with BO is to use "Right Guard".

In Case you are Wondering

Here are the Lyrics for "Dare You to Move." This is the Switchfoot song that David Cook performed on American Idol last night. This is also the song that spurred the question that spurred the blog (see "Things to Look for").

Dare You to Move - Switchfoot - Album: Beautiful Letdown

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?
What happens next?

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened before

Things to Look for

You must thank my daughter for my way of thinking this morning. Had she not asked me a certain question last night - who knows where we would be heading today. Her question was simple and innocent enough, however, it reflects much of the thought process of our culture today.

Of course last night American Idol was on the tube. We were unable to watch it as a family so when my daugther came downstairs to catch the ending I had to update her on all the songs, etc. I told her that David Cook had performed a song by Switchfoot. This band happens to be a family favorite. When I told her about the song she said, "Is he a Christian?" That's when the alarm bells go off in my head. Because I have found that we automatically assume that someone is a believe because they sang a song that is performed by Christian artists. Hey - Ozzy Osbourne could sing "Amazing Grace" but it doesn't make him a believer in Christ.

Now, as far as David Cook is concerned I don't know if he is a Christian. I didn't look it up. My point in bringing all of this up is that we are too impressionable. If someone sings a "Christian" song we wonder if they are a believer, if someone thanks God we wonder if they are a follower of Christ. It's the celebrity Christian culture that we have created that often leaves us reeling. Either we assume or someone claims to be a believer and it creates a bond between us and them. Which is fine until someone falls and we are left to pick up the pieces. This is true in the celebrity Christian culture as well as in our world today. We have got to stop taking things at face value.

Let's think about politics for a moment. If a politician thinks that they can get more votes they will talk about their Christian faith whether they are a Christian or not. It's true in politics - it's true in everything. Why do you think Jesus said that we could know people by their fruit? An orange tree can talk and sing about being an apple tree all day long but it doesn't change the fruit. Why does all of this matter? It matters because we don't think anymore. It matters because our young people are so impressionable. It matters because we have churches full of people who have never studied the Bible for themselves and hang on every word of their pastor. It matters because we have millions of voters in this country who vote for a president the same way they do for an American Idol contestant. They don't care about policies (most don't know what the policies are) they just like who they like. It matters because we need to be on guard.

In Matthew 7:15 Jesus said, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." You get the picture don't you? Looks like sheep - smells like sheep - sounds like sheep - but what's inside will kill you. Why do you think we have so many branches of theology that claims to be Christian? Someone said just enough to sound like a follower of Christ and sucked people into a belief system. The next thing you know thousands of people are sitting out in a field drinking kool-aid. What? You think I may be going a little too far? Then why is it that I can blog about the gifts of the Spirit and I get contacted by church members who say, "You made me get into my Bible today. I had to see it for myself"? It's simple: we get attached to a person and we believe most of what they say OR because we are so attached we don't question the things we disagree with. Jesus says, "BEWARE!"

Let me bring this to a close by sharing with you some things to look for:

Fruit - Does this person's life bear witness to what they say is true?

Discernment - What does your spirit say? Are you in agreement?

Jesus - How is Jesus portrayed? This is how cults and false teachers are identified. This is also why mormons have it all wrong!

Church - How does this person feel about the authority of the church? Do they fall under the church's authority?

If I don't do anything else with this blog I can at least force you to think. I'm not trying to make you cynical - I'm trying to keep you from being mauled by a wolf. Read for yourself, think for yourself, and stand up for yourself. You would be amazed at what God will do in you.

*Just as a side note - David Cook should be the next American Idol. Thank You.

I've Got the Power

Romans 11:29 teaches us that the gifts & the calling of God are irrevocable. If that is true (and it is) the church has some explaining to do!

Yesterday we focused on the fact that anything is possible for those who believe. ANYTHING! Why then is there division over the topic of spiritual gifts? If I were to paint with broad strokes I would say that most churches are divided into two camps: 1) Those who believe the gifts of the Spirit are still available & 2) Those who believe that only certain gifts are available. I'm actually being nice here because there is a limited few who don't believe in the gifts of the Spirit. But I simply don't feel like dealing with such a limited view of God. Let's focus on the most dominant ones.

#1 - Those who believe the gifts of the Spirit are still available.
This group of believers have a simple biblical view of the Spirit filled life. We understand that God has gifted every believer with some type of spiritual gift. These gifts are not just talents that have been enhanced but rather God has chosen to give some the ability to have spiritual discernment, faith, tongues, prophecy, healing, interpretation, etc. The greatest problem we have in this camp is that there are differing views of how these gifts should be used and how they are received.

#2 - Those who believe that only certain gifts are available.
This group of believers have a more complex view of the Spirit filled life. In other words it takes a lot of explanation to remove certain gifts from the inventory that God gives us in Corinthians. For most of these believers all gifts are available except for "sign gifts" such as healing, tongues, and prophecy. Most believe in prophecy but have changed it's definition. The greatest problem in this camp is how to explain the supernatural work of God while at the same time explaining away those things that make them uncomfortable.

All of this brings me to a word that most people are unfamiliar with: Cessationism. Cessastionists are those who believe that the gifts of the Spirit have ceased (at least the sign gifts). Most of them cling to certain biblical passages that have to be interpreted to mean something they don't. Nowhere in Scripture are we taught that the gifts have ceased except in reference to the second coming of Christ. When Jesus returns for His bride there will no longer be a need for the gifts of the Spirit as His followers will be made perfect. Ron Phillips makes an interesting statement about cessationism in his book "Awakened by the Spirit": "Cessationism at best is an excuse for the church's lack of power and the awful absence of Jesus' presence." Is anybody listening?

When we cease to experience God on certain levels we have a tendency to say that God must not work that way anymore. We have not experienced healing so God must not heal. I have never spoken in tongues so God must not work like he did in Acts. I have never been given a word of prophecy so prophecy must be limited to the preaching of the Bible. The excuses go on and on. I have never understood the arrogance one must possess to take this kind of stand. Basically what is being said is: "I'm so spiritual that if God were going to do something supernatural then it would happen in me." This is especially true when we are dealing with the touchy subject of tongues.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul told the believers that concerning Spiritual Gifts he did not want them to be ignorant. Pay attention to these words. He did not want them to be unlearned. So he made it a point to teach them about the diversity of the gifts and the fact that God gives them according to His own choosing and not just the ability to receive. You see - it bothers both camps that I stand in the middle. I'm a believer in the gifts of the Spirit but I don't believe that we will have the same gifts. Just because I have been filled with the Spirit does not mean I will SPEAK in tongues and just because I don't speak in tongues it does not mean that the gifts are dead. God is able to give the gifts He chooses to anyone He chooses. Even if I don't get it!

Rather than trying to explain our lack of spiritual power maybe we should spend time with God seeking His face and all that He wants to give. Do you really believe that God wants His church to exist powerless? NO! God wants the church of today to continue to function as the church of the New Testament. The gifts should continue to be in operation but with the guidelines given in Scripture. What needs to happen in the church today is believers falling on their face before God asking Him to move in their congregations. If we will seek Him - God will answer. Even if it means messing with our theology.

To Him Who Believes

Let's start Monday on the right foot. I want to go ahead and challenge your faith today. Mark 9:23 teaches us that ALL THINGS are POSSIBLE for one who BELIEVES! Do you believe that?

You might be saying, "Oh, but you don't know my circumstances." No I don't, but God does. Is there anything that can come into your life where God is going to slump back against His throne and say "I didn't expect that"? Of course not. Our God is in complete control at all times.

Then there are those "well meaning" believers that will tell you that they believe in the miracles of the Bible but aren't so sure that God still works that way today. As if somehow we have made such progression with the human race that we do not need divine intervention. If you are in a situation that requires faith in God then you ought to be encouraged. God has never failed at any time. All things are still possible to him who believes.

What about cancer? Believe!
Financial difficulty? Believe!
Family problems? Believe!
My son is off to war? Believe!
The lost in my family? Believe!

All things are possible to him who believes. When you read those words in the Bible you will find them in red print. Why? Because the printers of the Bible want to be sure that you see, read, and hear the words of Jesus. The promises of Jesus will not fail. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. God does not change. If you have the faith to believe then God is able to work in and through all situations. Do you believe?

Matthew 19:26 teaches us that with God all things are possible. Let's do the math together:
With God all things are possible
+ all things are possible for one who believes = NO IMPOSSIBILITIES!
Doesn't that excite you? Man, it fires me up.

No weapon formed against me shall prosper.
Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.
We are more than conquerors through Christ.

All of these promises and more are available to those who can believe. Isn't it good to be a believer? Keep the faith today and throughout this week. Watch and see what God is able to do for and through you. BELIEVE!

End of the Week Thoughts

Jesus said in John 9:4, "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work."

The news from this week has been focused upon the cyclone tragedy in Burma. One of the latest reports puts the death toll around 500,000 people. Make sure that number sinks into your mind. Just a few years ago Hurricane Katrina hit and killed 1,836, the Tsunami in Indonesia claimed 225,000, and 9/11 brought with it the loss of 2,974 people. In a moments notice thousands of people were swept into eternity.

As I thought about these staggering statistics I have to ask "How many of these people knew Jesus as their Lord and Savior?" I don't share these questions and numbers with you to depress you. I want them to motivate you because none of us know when the "night" will come.

Geoff Hammond, president of the North American Mission Board, was speaking recently at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary about the need for urgency in evangelism. Speaking from John 9:4 he called the students to action in regards to how we go about sharing our faith. Hammond said, "If we...were as concerned about doing the will of the Father as we were about fellowship, we would be a lot more effective at evangelizing Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth." OUCH!

I have to wonder how many of the people who died in Burma, Katrina, the Tsunami, and on 9/11 came into contact with a believer just before they died. How many of them were approached with the gospel? Another staggering statistic came from Dr. Hammond when he said, "Three-fouths of the people who die in the United States, die without a saving knowledge of God. Be sure, wherever you are, to share the love of Jesus Christ."

I bring all of this up to prepare you for the weekend. Many of you will be around family, heading out to eat, off for mini-vacations, or out to the ballpark. Who will you come in contact with? Who will hear about your faith in Jesus Christ? I know that we have heard many different theories about how to share. There are countless books that talk about timing, building relationships, and being sensitive. Those are all great approaches if you know when the "night" is coming. Believer - you are not afforded that luxury.

Take some time today to pray about whom God will put in your path. Pray that He will give you the courage to be urgent with your faith. We never know when God's divine appointments will meet us in the mall, at the grocery store, or during the family gatherings. Be willing to join God "On Mission" to reach the world for Christ.

Thoughts About the Presidency

The presidency of the United States of America is the highest office in the land. The president is also given the title as Commander in Chief of our military. With that being said, doesn't it make sense that our president have a military background?

I'm sure that this question will raise a lot of issues, however, it's one that should be asked. Some of the greatest presidents of this country served in the armed forces. I'm not suggesting that the individual has to have combat experience but I would like for them to have at least some military background. How can someone possibly lead our military if their only experience is watching "Pearl Harbor" or "Saving Private Ryan"?

Here are my reasons:

1) Deploying our military is a huge assignment. Our troops are not the World Police - rather they are serving to protect our country. We don't need a president who is going to put our men and women in uniform in harm's way simply as a distraction from their own political problems.

2) The general morale of our enlisted men and women deserve a president who has been where they are. They need to know that they are going to be taken care of, provided for, and recognized for their bravery and service. I have a great appreciation for our military but there is something different about the people around me that have served our country. They know what it means to fight for this country, honor our flag, and hold the office of the president in high regard.

3) The main purpose of the president of the United States is to protect and preserve our nation. It's not about handing out checks, delivering aid, or making sure that everybody is happy. No - the president should be concerned about making us safer. Global terrorism is the greatest threat we face. We need a commander in chief who recognizes that threat and will deal with it effectively.

4) One other reason that I want to give is in the area of leadership. It has been said that if you want to be a great leader you must first learn how to follow. The training provided to those in the military teaches men and women how to follow orders. However, it also teaches them how to think on their feet. You learn how to evaluate a situation and take the proper course of action. It's a training that is not provided in our colleges and universities. Leadership is a quality that is acquired through experience. You do not become a leader by gaining a title.

Those are just a few of the reasons I can give. I'm sure that if I spoke to one of the veterans in my congregation that they would have several more. When I look at the choices we face in this upcoming election there is only one person with military service. This is not a Republican/Democrat stance that I'm taking here. I am not at liberty to tell you who to vote for, nor would I. It just seems to me that there is a great void between the candidates. I could list all the differences but I won't. I would simply ask you to take a look at the accomplishments of each candidate and see for yourself. Which candidate has displayed their ability to actually lead something? Which candidate has a resume that has more to show than a college degree along with a little time in the Senate? Which candidate - on paper - would you hire as commander in chief? In other words: If America was your business and you needed a great manager, who would be the most trusted employee?

I know that our country does not think this way. We are more interested in a president that can give good speeches. We are more interested in a candidate that looks great in a suit or will make a good cover for TIME. We are more interested in a candidate that is going to bail us out of our stupid financial decisions and make sure that the rich don't keep getting richer. We are more interested in having a baby-sitter than a commander. What is wrong with our country? We need leadership - not empty promises.

In closing I want to be very honest with you. I'm not excited about any of our choices for the office of president. It seems to me that on either side of the aisle there are greater candidates. However, come election day we are going to have to choose who will best lead this nation. It's going to be difficult. I'm not sure how this thing will turn out. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a third option who could actually win - but there isn't. We are going to have to decide. We, the people, are going to have to ask which candidate will protect and preserve our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Who will you choose?

The Dash Matters!

www.dashpoemmovie.com

A friend recently shared with me an email with the following link. It provided a great reminder (for me) about how we should live our lives. I don't want to spend a lot of time talking about the movie. However, I do want to spend some time today thinking about the "dash."

The dash, for those of you wondering, is the thing that separates our date of birth from our date of death. The dash is what happens in the middle. Ask yourself the question: What will people remember about me? For most of us who visit a burial place we may look at the header on a tombstone and think about how long a person lived (Oh, they were 80 years old...)but those dates are not the true representation of who that person was. The Dash Matters! When all is said and done, when I take my last breath, the size of my house and the type of car I drove is not going to matter. What will matter is how I lived my life.

I was fortunate enough in life to have a great-grandfather who was a preacher. When I think about his "dash" it always brings great joy to me. I am reminded of a man who was very short in stature but large in life. I'm reminded of a man who had a wonderful laugh and a great love for God and family. I can still picture him sitting beside the kitchen table with these huge sunglasses on (cataract glasses) and his head leaned back in laughter. I can still see him riding his old tractor around until his health would not allow. And I can still remember the day that we buried him. I still remember the falling snow as the white hertz pulled onto the cemtary. It was a beautiful ending to a beautiful life. What I'm trying to say is that his "dash" made a difference in my life.

A couple of years after his death I made a visit to his grave. I was standing in front of his tombstone talking as if he could hear every word. I told him that I loved and missed him, and I told him how much he meant to me. I also stood there in tears as I shared my own calling into the gospel ministry. I can only imagine what it would have been like to share it with him face to face. Once when my brother and I were very small our family visited him at his church. I want you to picture two little twin boys standing on the stage in their button up shirts, dress pants and vests singing "Jesus Loves Me." He was so proud. I'd like to think that he would have had that same smile and tears streaming down his face as we embraced my call and each other.

I hope that my life will be remembered the same way for others. I hope that people will see in my life a love for God and family, a zeal to share the faith that God has given me, and the type of character that they want to see lived out in themselves. I realize that my "dash" will be full of mistakes, however, I hope that in the end people will remember me as someone who honored God.

How will people remember you. I had a professor in school who often said, "It's now how you start that matters but how you finish what you started." I did not know my great-grandfather before he was saved and called. He was always the preacher grandpa. But in the end, I don't think it would have mattered. What mattered most what how he finished his life. A life that was dedicated to God and to his family. Yes...the Dash Matters!

May you live a life that is filled with the excitement and joy that God intends. May your dash, as well as mine, give people an opportunity to laugh and give thanks to God.

Great to Be Home

I must say that it's good to be back in VA. The last 5 days have been very interesting but it's always wonderful to be home.

Most of you know that I was in New Hampshire on a Mission Trip. This was my very first construction trip. Needless to say, but construction trips are very different from evangelistic trips. The hardest thing for me was the mindset. Oh, there is still spiritual warfare, lost people to share with, and a God-sized task at hand; it just took me a while to get adjusted. I'm very grateful for the church members from PBC who went with us.

The Southern NH Rescue Mission is located in Nashua. It's one of several missions within the area. I was completely blown away by the poverty as well as the spiritual complacency. Let's just say that "Live Free or Die" is not a patriotic statement but a "deal with it" attitude about one's life. There is one thing that I took away from this trip that I want to share with you: The Power of the Gospel! It matters not if I'm in the New England states, deep in the South, or across the ocean; the Gospel is still the power of God unto salvation. It's the same message of Jesus Christ crucified and resurrected that changes lives. We cannot even come close to influencing a life for genuine change if we are not willing to give people the "Good News" of salvation.

I want to give a special thanks to David, Sam, Deanne, John, Anne, Roger, and Linda for their hospitality and genuine Christianity. Their faith is making a difference where they live and will continue to impact churches and the lost where they live. New Hampshire is truly a mission field - these lives are making a difference.

I ask you to pray for Southern NH Rescue Mission that they will continue to share the love of Christ above all else. Pray for Freedom Baptist Church as they seek to experience God and join Him where He is at work. Pray for Nashua Baptist Church as they continue to host missionaries and join God in missions work. Pray for the spiritual climate of New Hampshire that the people will become open to the Gospel Message.

One other word of thanks goes to Ron, John, Ronnie, Clay, Jeff, Alison, and Patty for their tireless work and determination on this trip. I pray that the work accomplished this week will be a lasting witness to what God can accomplish through those who say "YES" to Him. Pray for Pioneer Baptist Church as we continue to move forward On Mission with God this summer. May God bless you all.

National Day of Prayer

I hope that you will set aside some time today for prayer. I'm grateful for a nation that continues to view prayer as a national concern.

Here's some things you can pray for:
1) Leaders of our nation
2) Spiritual Revival
3) Protection of our country
4) Men & Women in the military
5) Direction of our nation
6) The lost
7) Churches to be light in darkness
8) Missionaries
9) Pastors
10) Families

These are just a few of the things that you could pray about throughout this day. I don't want you to think that you have to spend the whole day on your knees. God's Word teaches us to pray without ceasing. Today - I want you to have an attitude of prayer. Keep in constant communion with God.

As you pray I hope that you will remember our mission team as we travel to New Hampshire. Pray that God grant us safety and use us for His glory. May you be blessed throughout this day.

**Should you need any other points for prayer you can go to this link: http://www.ndptf.org/7x7/index.cfm?flash=1
